It’s no surprise that making your garage and home green contains many benefits. When making a home environmentally friendly, the garage is often times overlooked. Many people think that turning down the air conditioner and unplugging inactive electronic devices will do the trick, but that’s not the case. In fact, you can lose a good amount of energy through your garage. Fortunately there are many things you can do to make your garage greener and conserve energy.
1) Insulate your garage – this will keep your garage cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. This may be necessary for you especially if you find yourself spending a lot of time working inside the garage.
This will also protect your car from extreme changes in temperature. When looking into garage insulation, make sure that you check the R-value. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulation will be in your garage.
2) Install high-efficiency light bulbs – traditional light bulbs consumer way more energy than LED light bulbs. Replacing your old light bulbs with energy efficient ones will not only last longer, but will save you a good amount of money in the long run.
3) Properly store and dispose hazardous materials –  Improper disposal of chemicals, paint and auto fluids can be dangerous. It can be harmful to your health and environment. Store these items on a high self out of reach of children and animals. Make sure to close them tightly so there will no chance of spillage.
4) Conserve water – when washing your car, instead of using water from the sink or faucet, you can use natural water such as rain. You can do this by attaching a funnel system on the roof of your garage that will go in a barrel.
