There could be many reasons your garage door won’t work and it is important to deal with them as soon as possible to avoid potential danger. Here are some reasons that your garage door is not working. (Some of these you can fix by yourself and some may require a professional to come take a look.)

Garage Door Won’t Work: Top Reasons

  • Transmitter Batteries – believe it not, some people do forget that the transmitter needs to be powered in, in order to operate. Check the transmitter on garage wall as well.
  • Broken Torsion and Extension Springs – when a spring is broken or snapped, the door can no longer be lifted by the motor. A replacement of the springs is required in this case.
  • Worn out cables – Most of the time when a spring breaks, it will also break the cable. Therefore, the spring along with the cable needs to be replaced. We do recommend calling a professional technician because it could be dangerous.
  • Lock handle – Check the lock handle which is located outside of the garage door. When the lock handle is occupied it rids the ability to open the door automatically. Check that your door is unlocked before open the garage door. You can do this by yourself and don’t necessarily need a professional to come check.
  • Photo Eye – Each side of your garage door has photo eyes. The invisible beam that is located between the two photo eyes can be broken, which prevents the garage door from closing.
  • Alignment – All garage doors need to be in alignment in order to operate properly. A garage door that is out of alignment can be very dangerous. Check the gaps between the rollers to see if this may be the problem.
